Walewijk (Walewyk) – Lacloche, Madrid
In late 1897 La Epoca announced the arrival of Walewyk-Lacloche in Madrid. The shop will be run by J. Walewyk (Walewijk) of Biarritz, who has successful businesses, both shops and a factory in Paris, specialising in ‘Trousseaux and layettes’.
Unsurprisingly the shop is situated on Calle de Sevilla, 5 Palacio de la Equitativa, presumably not far from Lacloche Freres. For those interested in the connection, Bertha Lacloche, sister of Lacloche Freres, married Jacob (Jacques) Walewyk in 1876 Brussels.
Some 5 months later in Apr 1898 the same publication reports on the success of Walewyk-Lacloche and the large numbers of orders they have received for Trosseau and layette. The elegance of the Parisian fashions sold in the shop and how much they are appreciated by the ladies of Madrid.
It would seem that their goods were not only appreciated by the ladies of Madrid but also the Royals as in Mar 1907 with the impending birth of Alfonso XIII, King of Spain and Victoria Eugenia’s child, the heir apparent to the throne, there is a large spread in Nuevo Mundo 7 Mar 1907, on ‘La canastilla del futuro heredero de la corona de Espanoa’ created by Walewyk – Lacloche.
